TCDD Offers Free Materials

The Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities offers a variety of free materials that are available on this Web site and by request. Most of the materials produced by the TCDD may by copied or reprinted with the understanding that proper credit be given. Please contact Council staff for information on reproducing TCDD products.

TCDD Resources Include:

  • Acronyms. Common disability related acronyms.
  • E-mail News, Facebook and Twitter. TCDD has a free E-Mail News and Information service, as well as Facebook and Twitter accounts. Individuals can sign up to receive announcements on TCDD news and activities, disability news, advocacy opportunities, new Requests for Proposals, reports and training, etc.
  • FYI Advocacy Publication. The FYI is produced monthly, with a quarterly print version. It includes information on state and federal policy matters, current issues, advocacy opportunities, Council news and miscellaneous resources.
  • TCDD Annual Reports. In English and Spanish.
  • Biennial Reports. These address the state of services to persons with disabilities in Texas. They include recommendations for improvements. In English and Spanish.
  • Closing the Gap in Texas (PDF): Improving Services for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, October 2008. Also related materials from a Symposium on “Long Term Services and Supports for Texans: Economic and Policy Implications.”
  • The Next Step Higher Ed Video. This 19-minute video presents stories of five Texans with disabilities who enrolled in colleges, universities or technical schools.  It is designed to challenge students with disabilities, their families and educators to consider higher education as an option.  Available online, in VHS and on DVD. Includes captioning and a Spanish version (spoken, with closed captioning).
  • Moving to a Better Life - The video is intended to provide insight into the lives of people leaving institutions and transitioning into group homes or family settings and is a joint project of the Texas Center for Disability Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, Advocacy Inc., and the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities. Video is also available in closed caption and in Spanish.
  • Medicaid Waiver 101 - This 14 minute video provides a brief overview of the Texas Medicaid Waiver programs. The video is a joint project of the Texas Center for Disability Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, Imagine Enterprises and the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities. The video is also available in closed caption and in Spanish.
  • People First Language. This two-sided handout explores how to talk accurately and appropriately about people with disabilities. It is a good reference tool to use when speaking or writing, or to give to reporters or other individuals.  English and Spanish versions revised 02/07.
  • College Resources. The TCDD "Resource Guide on Higher Education for People with Disabilities" includes links to information on: Texas Colleges and Universities; Nationwide Colleges for Students with Disabilities; College Resource for All Texans; General College Information; Testing and College Preparation/Study Skills; Miscellaneous Topics on Disability and Higher Education; Education; Employment; Technology; Barrier Removal; and College Costs and Financial Aid.
  • Working with the News Media. This series of information sheets is designed to help people become more familiar with the news media and develop the skills they need to obtain coverage of disability issues.

  • Making a Good Match with Your HCS Program (PDF) is a brochure designed to help individuals in choosing their provider when enrolling in the Home and Community-based Services program. (Also in Spanish)
  • State Plan. The State Plan for Texans with Developmental Disabilities describes the goals, objectives and activities that the Council expects to address over a five-year period. In English and Spanish.
